This enchanting, multicoloured variety of Zea mays, an ancient plant domesticated in current-day Mexico around 7,700 years ago, grows gemlike cobs, each one rather unique. Glass Gem Rainbow Corn is a variety cultivated by Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer from Oklahoma. This seed stock has been saved from Organic corn grown in Melbourne, Australia.

Corn grows best in from mid-Spring onward, after the last frosts have passed. Plant in seedling trays for later transplant, or directly in the soil at a depth of about 2cm and water in. This variety grows to about 6-8 feet (182 - 244cm) and prefers soil temperatures above 20°C and a thorough mulching to retain moisture in the soil and slowly release nutrients as the plant grows.

Best sown in blocks of at least two dozen plants to ensure thorough pollination and cob formation, usually with two or three cobs per plant. Harvest around 110 days from sowing, once the cob husks are drying and the hairs have turned brown.
